I just saw a 6" bench crank grinder at a antique store for $40, and on Craigslist nearby there is a foot pedal type larger one that would be good for axes and such. Kind of thought picking one up but would need a monkey to crank the hand one loke the old movies.

Most of these old pedal powered stones I've seen do look like sandstone (and look extremely coarse), but the one my friend has, and a couple others that I've seen, are a white, fine grained stone. Maybe the white ones are just locally made replacement stones, since Missouri is loaded with limestone.

A good diamond surface grinder for a 4 1/2" grinder would work too but at $80 to $140 I'd opt for the old way unless I was in a real hurry. A small hardened steel point set in a wooden handle is a fair tool for this too. By keeping your cutter thin it digs into the stone better and you just run it across like a lathe turning tool.
