My belt grinder has a variable speed motor, I seldom run it very fast but is still way quicker than by hand. For sharpening I like to set the bevel with 120 grit and either microbevel it on a stone and off it goes, or overgrind through a progression of stones.

Been there, done that, but I was thinking about setting up a Blue Point drill sharpening rig to use with a 2" x 48" vertical belt grinder, I inherited both and about 4 dozen 80 grit belts.
